Decent days and nights
It was another great weekend. Days were quiet and lazy, consisting mainly of Tour de France-watching and naps. Nights were more active.
Friday night we discovered the deliciousness that is Calabria pizza, thanks to a recommendation from our amazing hair stylist. We also went to see The Brothers Bloom, which was really great. Think Dirty Rotten Scoundrels meets The Royal Tenenbaums. Go see it.
Saturday we went to see Moon at The Bytowne, which is also worth watching if you're at all into sci-fi. Afterwards we hung out at Zaphod's till way late. Fun.
We were in the mood for comfort food last night so we made sliders for dinner using this guy's recipe (with the addition of a pickle slice on each one). They were amazing. And so tiny and cute! We will totally be making them again.
Full
It was a weekend full of dinners out. Friday we went to B-Side for the second week in a row because it's in our 'hood and because we had been in the mood for sharing an assortment of small plates (also: they have cava by the glass). Saturday we went to the Black Cat for our official anniversary dinner and yesterday we went to Absinthe with family (because Allium was closed). Both were fantastic.
Today I feel like I really need to go to the gym but, of course, forgot my workout clothes at home. Tomorrow.
In self-inflicted injury news, my finger's healing well. It still hurts when I accidentally knock it on something, which I do at least a couple of times a day. But I graduated from gauze to regular bandages late last week and it looks and feels a wee bit better every day. And so long as the bit of fingernail I lopped off grows back, I won't be left with a permanent reminder of my stupidity. Fingers crossed.
Seventeen
Today is Arun's and my anniversary. We've been together for 17 years. Seventeen! That's half my life! And tomorrow is our 9th wedding anniversary.
We have a really wonderful relationship and a life together that is so full of love and joy and laughter I can hardly believe my luck. It's pretty awesome.
Happy anniversary, Love! Here's to many, many more.
Apply some pressure
You know when else I should pay more attention? When I'm wielding a large, sharp kitchen knife. I cut a chunk off the tip of my left index finger last night while chopping scallions.
Arun looked at the bit of finger on the cutting board and immediately suggested we go to emergency. I insisted on waiting for a bit and after about half an hour I admitted it was pretty bad and called Telehealth Ontario to see whether or not they thought I needed to go to emergency. They said yes.
So we went to emergency and the nurse took a look at it and said they couldn't do anything for it (the way I cut it isn't stitchable). When I told her that Telehealth said I should come in and have it looked at she rolled her eyes and said they tell everyone to go to emergency. She then just taped a big piece of gauze to my finger and told me it's the kind of cut that's going to bleed and bleed and take a long time to scab so until then I should keep it elevated and apply some pressure to it.
After taking another look at it this morning, I think I'll be walking around with a heavily bandaged finger for a long time. I just hope my fingernail grows back properly (did I mention I lost part of my nail?). It's gross. And it really hurts. In any case, I'll be staying home today to nurse it and listen to Maximo Park.
Cinnamon buns!
I need to start paying more attention when I'm grocery shopping. I will routinely grab the thing beside the thing that I want on the shelf and not notice until I get home. For example, I've come home with white kidney beans instead of navy beans, mango apricot yogurt drink instead of vanilla (which actually turned out to be much tastier than the vanilla), and, most recently, traditional yeast instead of quick rise. And that disastrous goof I didn't notice until after I made a batch of sweet dough for cinnamon buns with it. Ugh. I'm an idiot.
Needless to say, I tossed that batch, went and bought the right yeast and started over again. It took five hours from (re)start to finish but damn, they are delicious.

Two movie weekend
It was a two movie weekend—we saw Up and Whatever Works (the new Woody Allen movie). I'm sure you've all seen Up by now so you don't need me to tell you how great it was. Whatever Works was really good, too. If you're even remotely partial to Woody Allen movies, I suggest you go see it.
Aside from having to go to a meeting tomorrow, I'll be continuing my vacation this week. Arun's still working so it'll be a pretty quiet week. I'll be reading (reading, reading), doing some baking, and going to the gym and yoga to work off the baked goods.
My other vacation project is to get back in the habit of taking photos again. I used to stop and take photos of whatever happened to catch my eye all the time (and that worked out pretty well) but somewhere over the course of the winter I stopped because it was usually too cold and haven't picked it up again. I still see things that catch my eye and think "that would make a cool photo" but don't actually stop and take the picture, despite the fact that my trusty little camera is always in my purse. It's inexcusable, really, so this week I will make the effort to reinstate my old routine. I just hope I haven't lost my touch.
